History of the Department

Department of Medical Biology, State Higher Educational Establishment I.Ya. Horbachevsky Ternopil State Medical University, Ministry of Public Health, Ukraine dates back to June, 1957. It was then that Ivan Ivanovych Yaremenko was appointed an acting Head of the Biology Department in Ternopil State Medical Institute by order of the Ministry of Public Health, UkrSSR.

Associate professor I. I. Yaremenko had been the head of the Department till July, 1974.

From 1974 through 1995 the Department had been headed by professor Anatoliy Ivanovych Lokay.

From 1995 through 1998 the Department of Medical Biology, Genetics and Parasitology had been chaired by associate professor Roman Bohdanovych Boychuk.

In 1998, the Department of Medical Biology, Genetics and Parasitology was incorporated into the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Virology that had been headed by professor Serhiy Ivanovych Klymnyuk.

In 2000, the Department of Pharmacognosy with Biology and Medical Genetics was set up. In 2000-2001 it had been chaired by professor Svitlana Mykhaylivna Marchyshyn; through 2002 – by professor Mykhaylo Mykhaylovych Korda; and in 2002 – 2003 - by professor Nina Andriyivna Kulikova.

In 2003, the Department of Medical Biology was formed with Lidiya Teodorivna Kotlyarenko at the head.

In 2005, the Department was incorporated into the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Virology with professor Serhiy Ivanovych Klymnyuk at the head till 2011.

In 2011, the Department of Medical Biology became a separate unit with professor Lidiya Teodorivna Kotlyarenko at the head till 2013.

Since February, 2012 the Department of Medical Biology has been chaired by professor Larysa Yaroslavivna Fedonyuk.

YAREMENKO IVAN IVANOVYCH

Chief, Department of Biology (1957-1975),

Yaremenko Ivan Ivanovych was born on June 11, 1903 in a rural family, in the village of Shcherbaky, Poltava region.

From 1929 through 1933 he studied at the Biology Faculty, Kharkiv State University (Kharkiv Pedagogical Institute of Professional Education).

At the end of the university course Ivan Ivanovych worked as a teacher of biology in the vestibule school of the plant “Svitlo Shakhtara” (Miner’s light). He graduated from the university with the specialty “Teacher and Researcher of Biocycle”. From 1933 through 1935 I.I. Yaremenko worked as a methodologist at the institute for advanced training of agricultural specialists and extra-mural education, Kharkiv.

1935-1938 - assistant lecturer at the Department of Biology and Zoology, Teachers' Training Institute, Berdyansk. With closing down the faculty in 1938, I.I. Yaremenko was transferred to the Teachers’ Institute in Hlukhiv, Sumy region where he worked as a teacher of zoology and the Dean of the Natural- Geographical Faculty till August, 1941.

With the Hlukhiv institute restored in 1943, I.I. Yaremenko worked as a master teacher and deputy manager on instructional work till the end of 1946.

1947-1957 - assistant lecturer at the Department of Biology, Stanislav (Ivano-Frankivsk) Medical Institute. Accomplishment of a thesis “Oak Silkworm in Prykarpattya Collective Farms”.

By the resolution of the Council of the Institute of Zoology, Academy of Sciences of UkrSSR, in 1955 I.I. Yaremenko was given the candidate degree in biological sciences.

By order of the Ministry of Public Health, UkrSSR of 1957, I.I. Yaremenko was appointed an acting Head of the Biology Department in Ternopil State Medical Institute.

By the resolution of the Higher Certification Commission in November 1958, I.I. Yaremenko was confirmed the academic rank of the associate professor.

As a scholar of Ternopil Medical Institute, I.I. Yaremenko established a reputation as an active researcher. Within the range of his scientific interests were biological aspects of fauna and ecological aspects of flora in the Western Ukrainian region. He is the author of 80 scientific publications, including 4 monographs; 7 rationalization proposals and 1 invention. Also, I.I. Yaremenko developed a method of growing oak silkworm on hard trees (oak, hornbeam). A lot of his works were focused on the problem of creating a healthier environment through planting phytoncid –containing vegetation. For this purpose he studied phytoncid activity of decorative and wild plants of different families.

It was I.I. Yaremenko who initiated the first school of the Biology Department – Medical Parasitology. For many years he rendered advisory support to the research of biological characteristics of parasites – helminths and development of preventive measures and means of struggling them.

Under his supervision, 2 candidate dissertations, dealing with the study of the causative agents of trichinellosis (N.A. Kulikova, “Spread and Channels of Porkworm Infection (Trichinella spiralis, R. Owen, 1835) in Ternopil region”) and echinococcosis (S.P. Marchenko, “Spread and Biology of Echinococcus in the Conditions of Ternopil Region”) were successfully defended.

On his initiative, an instructive biological museum, inaugurated in 1967, was set up at the Biology Department of Ternopil Medical Institute.

I.I. Yaremenko headed the Department till July, 1974.

He passed away on December 27, 1978 at the age of seventy five.

LOKAY ANATOLIY IVANOVYCH

Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor

Born on August 21, 1928 in Furmanivka, Kamyanets-Podilsky district, Khmelnytsk region.

Graduated with honours from Stanislav Medical Institute in 1955

Candidate of Medical Sciences since 1963.

Candidate thesis “Functional State of Adrenal Cortex in Patients with Acute Dysentery” on the specialty Infectious Diseases.

Academic rank of the associate professor was given in 1967.

Doctor of Medical Sciences since 1972.

Doctoral thesis “Pathogenesis, Clinical picture, Differential diagnosis, and Treatment of Poisoning Caused by Death Cap Mushroom (Clinico-Experimental Research)” on the specialty Infectious Diseases.

Academic rank of the professor was given in 1974.

Trends of research activities and scientific interests: toxicology of deadly amanita. Under his supervision, a scientific laboratory dealing with basic research on cap mushroom poisoning was set up, thus providing clinico-experimental diagnostics for acute gastrointestinal diseases that is in use to this day.

A.I. Lokay is the author and co-author of above 200 scientific and instructive publications including 5 method recommendations, 5 patents, and 1 author's certificate.

He was an academic adviser of 6 Candidates and 4 Doctors of Medical Sciences.

His significant achievements in biology and medicine were awarded with medals “Honours in High School” and “Honours in Public Health”.

A.I. Lokay passed away on October 15, 2009.

BOYCHUK ROMAN BOHDANOVYCH

Born on March 18, 1963 in Bilche Zolote, Borshchiv district, Ternopil region.

Graduated from Ternopil State Medical Institute in 1986.

Candidate of Medical Sciences since 1990.

Candidate thesis “Early Effect of Death Cap Mushroom Poisoning on the Systemic Homeostasis” on the specialty 14.00.20 – Toxicology.

Academic rank of the associate professor was given in 1996.

Doctor of Medical Sciences since 1999.

Doctoral thesis “Pharmacological Correction of Metabolic Disorders in Death Cap Mushroom Poisoning” on the specialty 14.03.08 – Pharmacology.

Academic rank of the professor was given in 2001.

Trends of research activities and scientific interests: aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical picture, differential diagnosis, pharmacotherapy, and prevention of mushroom poisoning.

R.B. Boychuk is the author and co-author of above 120 scientific and instructive publications including 1 monography, 1 textbook, 3 manuals, 1 multimedia CD, 3 information bulletins, 8 author's certificates and patents, and 12 rationalization proposals.

KOTLYARENKO (VYKLUK) LIDIA TEODORIVNA

State Higher Educational Establishment “I.Ya.Gorbachevskyi Ternopil State Medical University, the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine”,

Doctor of Medicine, Professor

Born November 2, 1965 in the Kopychyntsi city of Ternopil region.

In 1991 graduated from Kyiv University by Shevchenko.

Candidate of Biological Sciences since 1994 year.

Thesis on “Toxic hepatitis in animals with different resistance to hypoxia” specialty 14.00.20-Toxicology.

Awarded the rank of associate professor in 2003.

Doctor of Biology from 2007.

Doctoral thesis on: “Morphological patterns of small intestine structures remodelling depending on vegetative homeostasis of rats under death-cup (Amanita phalloides) poisoning.” – speciality 14.03.01 – Normal anatomy.

Awarded the title of Professor 2010.

Areas and fields of research: the study of the pathogenesis of lesions of the small intestine and other organs of the conditions of exogenous factors poisoning biological and chemical origin. Search for new achievements in the development of molecular biology including molecular genetic and immunological studies of biological traces of human identification.

The author and co-author of 143 educational, methodical and scientific publications, including 2 manuals, a multimedia CD, 4 patents, 5 of rational proposals.

There are two supervisor theses for the degree of candidate of biological sciences.

For outstanding achievements in the fields of biology and medicine was awarded the Medal of Yaroslav Mudryy.

FEDONIUK LARYSA YAROSLAVIVNA

Doctor of Medicine, Ph.D., M.D., Professor

Fedoniuk Larysa Yaroslavivna was born on June 22, 1974, in the town of Rivne, Rivne region, Ukrainian.

She started her labor activity being a senior pupil at comprehensive secondary school – she worked as a wardattendant at a policlinic department, Ternopil Municipal Clinical Hospital, and as a wardattendant at hematological department, Ternopil Municipal Pediatric Hospital (1989-1991).

In 1997 she graduated from Ternopil State Medical Academy on specialty “General Medicine” with honours.

After graduation she completed primary specialization (Internship) on therapy on the base of Ternopil Regional Clinical Hospital.

In 1998-2003 she worked at I.Ya. Gorbachevskyi Ternopil State Medical Academy as an assistant-trainee at first, and later – an assistant of the Department of Histology, Cytology and Embryology.

In 2003 she became a Candidate of Medical Sciences. The thesis to obtain the degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences on specialty 14.03.09 – Histology, Cytology, Embryology of the subject “Morphofunctional changes in the kidneys parenchyma in the organism adaptation to cellular dehydration” was defended at the session of the Specialized Scientific Council at O.O.Bogomolets National Medical University. By the Order of the Presidium of the Higher Certification Committee of Ukraine dated June 11, 2003 (the minutes№ 9-09/6) the Diploma of Candidate of Medical Sciences ДК № 019055ДК № 019055 was awarded.

In 2003 Fedoniuk L.Ya. changed the place of residence and moved to Chernivtsi. The same year she was accepted for employment on a competitive basis on the position of Associate Professor at the Department of Medical Biology, genetics and Histology, Bukovinian State Medical University.

The academic rank of Associate Professor was awarded in 2005. By the Order of the Certification Board, the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine dated April 21, 2005 (minutes № 2/66-Д) the Certificate of Associate Professor 02ДЦ №014204 was issued.

Since 2010 she has been Doctor of Medicine, M.D. The thesis to obtain the degree of Doctor of Medicine on specialty 14.03.09 – Histology, Cytology, Embryology of the subject “Structural organization of valve apparatus changes in case of acquired heart defects” was defended at the session of the Specialized Scientific Council at Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University. By the Order of the Presidium of the Higher Certification Committee of Ukraine dated April 14, 2010 (the minutes№ 27-09/3) the Diploma of Doctor of Medicine, M.D.ДД № 008193 was awarded.

The academic rank of Professor was awarded in 2011. By the Order of the Certification Board, the Ministry of Education and Science, Youth and Sports of Ukraine dated December 23, 2011 (minutes № 2/01-П) the Certificate of Professor 12ПР № 007550 was issued.

Till February 2012 she worked as Professor at the Department of Histology, Cytology and Embryology, Bukovinian State Medical University. In February 2012 she returned to Ternopil. The same year she was accepted for employment on a position of the Chief, Department of Medical Biology, State Higher Educational Establishment (SHEE) “I.Ya. Gorbachevskyi Ternopil State Medical University, the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine”.

Since September 2013 till August 2014 she worked on the position of Director, the institute of Medical-Biological Problems, State Higher Educational Establishment (SHEE) “I.Ya. Gorbachevskyi Ternopil State Medical University, the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine”.

The labour activity of Fedoniuk L.Ya. is devoted both to scientific and pedagogical work. Larysa Yaroslavivna is the author of more than 300 published works including over 200 scientific and 60 of educational-methodological character. The results of scientific research are presented in 4 patents of Ukraine on the useful model and 4 certificates on the rationalization proposal. Scientific interests of Fedoniuk L.Ya. are many-sided. She is engaged in the problems of morphological investigation of the heart valves within the norm and in case of acquired heart defects, studies peculiarities of the structure of the heart valves in the prenatal and postnatal periods of human ontogenesis, conducts a comprehensive examination of interrelations of the physical properties and morphological signs of biological tissues within the norm and in case of their structural organization. The results of her research are frequently presented on international and all-Ukrainian scientific forums.

Under her supervision two young scientists obtain the degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences on specialty 14.03.09 – Histology, Cytology, Embryology, and one candidate obtain a degree of Candidate of Biological Sciences on specialty 14.03.01 – Normal Anatomy. Under her supervision one scientist is working on her scientific research to obtain the degree of Candidate of Biological Sciences on specialty 14.03.01 – Normal Anatomy, as well as students whose works are frequently prize-winners of the All-Ukrainian Contest of Students’ Papers on theoretical medicine.

Fedoniuk L.Ya. is an experienced pedagogue actively introducing her knowledge into new teaching technologies. Larysa Yaroslavivna is a co-author of 7 educational manuals and 5 textbooks for the students of higher medical and pharmaceutical educational establishments of III-IV levels of accreditation adopted by the Ministry of Education and Science, Youth and Sports of Ukraine, adopted and recommended by the Central Methodological Board on Higher Medical Education, the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine.

Larysa Yaroslavivna is a member of the Specialized Scientific Council Д 08.601.03.at the State Establishment "Dnipropetrovsk Medical Academy, the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine" and Specialized Scientific Council Д 58.601.02 at SHEE "I.Ya.Gorbachevskyi Ternopil State Medical University" on defence of theses to obtain the degree of Candidate and Doctor of Sceinces on specilaties 14.03.01 – Normal Anatomy (biological sciences) and 14.03.09 – Histology, Cytology, Embryology (medical sciences).

Larysa Yaroslavivna is a member of the editorial board of the scientific journal “Herald of Morphology” (Vinnitsa, Ukraine) and scientific-practical reviewed journal “Herald of SurGU. Medicine” (Surgut, Russia).

Bibliographic information of L.Ya.Fedoniuk are included into the book “Future is created today (2007-2012)” and “Graduates of I.Ya. Gorbachevskyi Ternopil State Medical University. Gold fund of the glory and proud of the university” (2014).

In 2011 L.Ya. Fedoniuk is awarded with Honorary Diploma of Chernivtsi Regional Council “For Considerable Personal Contribution into the Development of Domestic Science and High Professionalism”.
